Food Programs
Lower Cape Outreach runs 8 food pantries on the lower Cape plus a centralized food storage warehouse in Orleans. In 2010, 1182 lower Cape households turned to our volunteer-staffed pantries for a total of roughly $553,575.00 worth of food. We distributed an additional $47, 593 worth of food to our local Councils on Aging, WIC, Cape Cod Children's Place and other direct service organizations to provide to their clients. Additionally, Lower Cape Outreach Council provided food baskets to our clients during the holiday season and again in the spring. Last year, over 1,000 households received these baskets to help tide them over. Though we are blessed with generous donations of food throughout the year by local individuals, businesses and organizations, in 2010 the Council spent an additional $85,562 to stock our pantries with fresh foods and nutritious alternatives to canned and packaged products. An very special addition to our Food Program was the fresh produce we grew in our own Gilmore Garden of Hope here in Orleans. Altogether, we were able to provide our clients with an average of 30 bags per week of fresh produce from June through September.
